That's simply not true. There are hundreds of short courses in South Africa that focus on practical skills instead of academic qualifications.

The challenge isn't finding a course—it's finding a legitimate provider.

A quick Google search will return hundreds of websites promising certificates, but not all of them are recognised or worth your time. That's why I've put together this guide using providers that are well known in South Africa and internationally.

Whether you're looking for a free online course, a distance learning college, or a career-focused short course, there's something here for almost every budget.

1. University of Johannesburg (UJ) Free Online Courses

If you're looking for a place to start without spending money, I'd honestly begin with UJ.

The University of Johannesburg offers a growing collection of free online MOOCs that anyone can enrol in. Subjects include Artificial Intelligence, Financial Literacy and Sustainable Development, and successful learners receive a digital certificate upon completion.

One thing I like about these courses is that they're beginner-friendly. You don't need to be a university student to enrol, which makes them perfect if you're trying to build your CV before applying for jobs.

2. Skills Academy (Paid)

If you're prepared to invest a little in yourself, Skills Academy is probably one of the most recognised colleges in South Africa offering short courses without Matric.

Which Short Courses Without Matric Are Actually Worth Doing?

This is probably the question that matters most.

Personally, I wouldn't choose a course simply because it's free.

I'd choose one because it teaches a skill employers are actively looking for.

Right now, some of the strongest areas include digital marketing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, business administration and customer service.

For example, if your long-term goal is working online, I'd start with UJ Free Online Courses to build confidence, move on to Google Certification Courses for practical digital skills, and then specialise further through Free Digital Marketing Courses or Free Cyber Security Online Courses, depending on which career path interests you more.

That progression makes much more sense than collecting ten unrelated certificates that don't build on each other.
